Did You Know?
As I was a bit freaked out by the vision of the future in the Web 3.0 world (as discussed in my last post), I wanted to find something a bit less scary but still focused on Web 2.0 (or 3.0) this week. I viewed a few of the "Did You Know" videos and really liked this one. It's from 2009 so some statistics may have changed, but it gives some interesting facts about such things as the decline of traditional media and advertising versus the rapid growth of on-line media and advertising. And did you know that Wikipedia launched in 2001 and now contains over 13 million articles in over 200 languages? How about that 90% of the 2 billion e-mails sent each day are spam? Anyway, this video is a fun way to look at how technology has truly changed the world. What this says to me is that the educational system - K through 12 and higher education - must change in order to keep up with the students who are served by this system and prepare our future generations to effectively and appropriately use these technology-based tools. What are your thoughts?

Hi Sue:
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this highly informative video about evolution of the internet and the growth and development of different forms of web technologies. I learned a lot from the video and I just can not believe how fast and extensive has been the change in the forms of media and communication mediums that people now turn to for exchange of information and social interactions.
I totally agree with your comments which state, "The educational system - K through 12 and higher education - must change in order to keep up with the students who are served by this system and prepare our future generations to effectively and appropriately use these technology-based tools." Yet, I also recognize this will not be an easy task to fulfill because of the current economic downturn that the United States is experiencing and the lack of resources to commit to the above endeavors,
Wow that was an awesome video!! I think about how rarely I watch television live and using the fast forward on my dvr is impacting the advertisements that I view. I do still read a paper copy of the news papers on Sundays and receive 3 non teaching related magazines by snail mail. So I am a little stuck in the times I guess but I like it that way.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering what kinds of changes you and Aja would recommend for the educational system based on this video?
Hi Greg:
ReplyDeleteI would like to see more investment in and emphasis on project based learning and collaborative projects. Personally, I know that I enjoy the learning process more when I am working and engaging with others.
The Did You Know 4.0 video opens with the statement, "A surge of new technologies and social media innovations is altering the media landscape." I believe this alteration is also occurring in the educational landscape. I think that this is a wonderful thing. I hope that for some of the kids and adults who felt bored and not connected to their school and the learning process will not only reconnect, but eventually become engaged and motivated with all the exciting upcoming change that will be occurring in the educational system.
